At the outset of the Revolutionary War, in June 1775, the Second Continental Congress asked George Washington to take charge of the newly created Continental Army. When he assumed command, Washington did not realize that he would be called on to lead his men through a long and challenging war.
The next years would be filled with battles, marches, sieges, crises . . . and cold, hard winters. Though Washington’s strong leadership and fortitude helped secure victory and independence for the nation, he would not see his home at Mount Vernon again until September 1781 – six years later.
